Major Attractions in Ella
Ella Rock
This gradual trek going 8 kilometers uphill to the majestic Ella Rock goes through a scenic trail. The summit, at 1041 meters, offers an amazing 360 degree view of the beautiful mountain country.
Ravana Waterfalls
The picturesque trek up the Ravana Falls has a great mythological allusion. The legend goes that the pool under the falls was the bathing place for Mandodari, the wife of Ravana, the villain from the Ramayana. The caves behind the falls, known as Ravana Ella Caves or Sitha Caves are supposed to be the spot where he kidnapped & detained Sita, the wife of Lord Rama.
Little Adam’s Peak
A gradually ascending trek up the scenic trail to the Little Adam’s Peak rewards you with a vivid canvas of colors spread out in the glorious panoramic countryside. Nine Arches Bridges
The Nine Arches Bridge is not only an engineering feat of the 20th century but also a charming edifice set in a striking backdrop. The legend goes that during its construction, the Great War broke out and the British reallocated the steel required for the bridge towards the war effort. This bridge was completed by local craftsmen using only stones and cement. The bridge, an architectural marvel, has stood the test of time and is still operational.
Dhowa Cave Temple or Dhowa Raja Maha Vihara
This beautiful cave complex near Bandarawela dates back to the 1st century BC. Once an asylum for King Valagamba during his exile from Anuradhapura; this glorious edifice with its elaborate entrance and a 38 ft image of Buddha carved from a rock, is certainly a piece of art. The walls & ceilings of the caves are adorned with stunning paintings.
